No one will be shocked to read that, but does that mean that only extroverts are expected to lead? No it does not. Does it mean that introverts need to suck it up and go against their nature to start a business and manage a team? Nope. Does it mean that inclusion means changing our expectations of leaders? Yes it does. And finally, are you an introvert and a leader, reading this and feeling exhausted from forcing yourself to be more outspoken than you naturally are? Here are a few ways that you can make introversion work for you:

Embrace it
Embrace your introverted traits, recognizing that they bring valuable qualities to the table. Introverts often excel in observing, analysing, and making well-thought-out decisions. Understand that introversion is not a weakness but a unique perspective that can lead to successful leadership.

Communicate
Communication doesn’t only mean talking. In fact, active listening is just as much a part of communication as active speaking. Encourage team members to share their thoughts and ideas, and genuinely listen to what they have to say. This not only fosters trust but also ensures that all voices are heard.

The “I’ll get back to you”
Often introverts feel a pressure to know what to say immediately. There is nothing wrong with pausing and pondering over something before responding. Any introvert reading this will be remembering all the times they wish they had just pressed pause.

Democracy
Leadership today is all about inclusion. We are tired of hierarchical structures and want to embrace more democratic engagement and management styles. While that doesn’t mean we can’t have an individual leading an organisation, it does mean we can embrace delegation and empower our teams. Being a good leader means a certain level of self-acceptance. If you know what you struggle with, then you can let others in your organisation shine in those areas. Your company will only benefit from this. You don’t have to be perfect at everything to be a great leader.

Take Breaks for Recharge
Introverts often need time alone to recharge their energy. As a leader, no one is there to manage your workload but yourself. We need to normalise leaders acknowledging that they need time for R&R. We need to push back the culture of burnout-means-you-really-care. Space out your meetings, or opt for no-meetings days. If you can share your needs, others will feel more comfortable to share theirs.

Personal Branding and its Lasting Impact on Entrepreneurs

https://www.blackandgood.com/stories/personal-branding-and-its-lasting-impact-on-entrepreneurs

https://www.blackandgood.com/stories/personal-branding-and-its-lasting-impact-on-entrepreneurs#comments

Black businesses

Black community

Black Entrepreneurs

Black leaders

Black Women

In a world filled with talent and thriving industries, Black women aspire to rise above the clamour; building profitable businesses, and creating legacies that resonate for generations. The art of personal branding is one of the keys to unlocking this transformative journey. This dynamic approach enables entrepreneurs to stand out, exhibit their authentic selves, and make an indelible impression on their target audience. In this blog post, we will explore the lasting impact of personal branding and how it will empower you to find your unique voice and inspire others on their path to success.

At the core of personal branding lies who you are as an individual and an entrepreneur. For Black women entrepreneurs, embracing and celebrating their unique cultural heritage and lived experiences becomes a foundation for crafting an authentic identity. By intertwining personal stories, values, and aspirations with their businesses, they create a compelling narrative that resonates deeply with their target audience, fostering trust and loyalty. A prime example is Pat McGrath, the renowned makeup artist and founder of Pat McGrath Labs. With an illustrious career spanning decades, Pat's exceptional talent and visionary approach to beauty have earned her the title "Mother" and "Queen" of makeup artistry. Through her bold creativity, groundbreaking product launches, and collaborations with top fashion houses, Pat McGrath has built an unparalleled personal brand that celebrates inclusivity and pushes the boundaries of beauty.

In addition, differentiation is the key to success in a competitive marketplace. Personal branding enables Black entrepreneurs to showcase their expertise, unique skill sets, and innovative approaches, setting them apart from the competition. By defining what makes you exceptional, you will establish yourself as a thought leader and a trendsetter in your industry, capturing the attention of potential clients and collaborators. A stellar example of this is Melissa Butler, the founder of The Lip Bar. Melissa embarked on her journey as a side hustler, determined to challenge the beauty industry's lack of diversity and representation. With a mission to create vegan, cruelty-free, and inclusive beauty products, Melissa's brand has empowered women of all skin tones. Melissa has added a lasting impression on the beauty industry and beyond through her authentic voice and dedication to empowering her community.

Effective personal branding also transcends transactions and focuses on building genuine connections. For entrepreneurs seeking to build a profitable business and leave a legacy, cultivating meaningful relationships with their audience and peers is paramount. By engaging in authentic dialogue and active networking, you will establish a supportive community, exchange valuable insights, and positively impact the lives of those you serve.

It wouldn't be a conversation on personal branding if we didn't mention the digital era we live in. Personal branding finds its perfect stage on various online platforms where you can share your stories, expertise, and values with a global audience. Creating consistent and engaging content showcases passion, expertise, and commitment, effectively leaving a lasting impression on those across their digital footprint.

Personal branding has a ripple effect that extends beyond an individual entrepreneur. By building a solid personal brand, you will become inspiring role models for other aspiring women in their communities.

10 Best Twitter Accounts to Learn About Black-Owned Business

https://www.blackandgood.com/stories/10-best-twitter-accounts-to-learn-about-black-owned-business

https://www.blackandgood.com/stories/10-best-twitter-accounts-to-learn-about-black-owned-business#comments

Black and Good

Black businesses

Twitter may only be a microblogging platform, but the information you can find is anything but micro. In the meantime, please read about our most recent event below.

Burnout and Developing Balance
The first series was about 'Burnout and Developing Balance'. During this panel discussion, we heard from three incredible entrepreneurs about their journey from burnout to balance and how they began developing their mindsets. The event aimed to create a safe space for honest discussion, highlight the signs and added elements that lead to burnout.

Life holds many waves and unexpected turns. Sometimes our persistent pursuit of balance may be the goal that leaves us feeling short of the mark. When it comes to burnout, what's important is the recognition of our needs, the understanding of what isn't working and what needs to change.

As entrepreneurs, our work and vision often become prominent in our lives. We can pour our life force into our work, ultimately forgetting about our core and what needs to be sustained from within. Subria Jones, a.k.a The Corporate Hippie, shared that burnout is a creeper condition, meaning you don't recognise it is happening or are in it - until suddenly it demands your attention. With this in mind, below are ways to support your wellness moving forward:

The first step is honouring that waves will arise. Then we need to learn the skills to sail through them when they do. Therapy, community spaces, and having solid connections can support this.

Take a moment to develop perspective. What do you need more of in your life right now, and what would be helpful to release?

Assess your approach. If you carry multiple plates and work all day into the night, ask yourself, "Am I placing my worth and success on my outcomes? Have I created a bar I must reach to deem myself worthy?"

If so, hold grace with yourself. You are more than the things that you do. Build a life that includes the essential elements of wellness. Incorporate rest, healthy relationships, connection, joy, and purpose. Begin with planting these seeds; transformation will take time to happen.

Snatch time and re-focus your priorities. Carve out the necessary time for what is most important - your health, your life, and your mental wellbeing. Develop a perspective and focus on what our priorities are.

Give it purpose. If you are struggling to release your responsibilities right now, pause. Please take a moment to re-centre, remind yourself of the goal, and give it reason and meaning—our Why is often our fuel and can carry us through.

Talk, share, connect. Talking to colleagues, friends, and family about the pressures and how you are feeling, it may become apparent that you needn't do this alone, and in fact, there is a willing and able support system out there to help you.

We hope this article has been of great help to you, and the next time you notice the signs of burnout, remember to pause and slow down. We have some inspiring events coming up to support your business journey.

Our next Mindset Session is on 11 April! A conversation on challenges, difficulties, and how to grow through them. Join us.

Black and Good Presents Brunch and Learn Wellness Session

https://www.blackandgood.com/stories/black-and-good-presents-brunch-and-learn-wellness-session

https://www.blackandgood.com/stories/black-and-good-presents-brunch-and-learn-wellness-session#comments

Black and Good

Black community

Black Entrepreneurs

Black Women

Brunch and Learn

Mental Health

Well-being

The Brunch and Learn session was part of the Black and Good business skills programme for both the Starting up, Starting out, and Build, Hustle, Grow programme. The main focus of this segment was wellness for Black women founders. During the session, we discussed mindfulness, permission to slow down, how our inner critic can hold us back in business, and where it stems from. Both sessions included a grounding meditation with Priscilla sharing with us a powerful quote by Audre Lorde:

“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.”

During the session, we learned that the best way to practice mindfulness is to incorporate it into our daily habits, whether that be while walking, showering, or pouring a cup of tea. It calls on us to practice empathy, and self-compassion and connect to the awareness of our body sensations.

Mindfulness and self-compassion are incredibly important and almost absent within the community of Black women founders. Participants shared the feeling of constantly needing to be strong as Black women and the added weight of having to work harder than others which mean self-compassion and slowing down can be difficult to balance.

Priscilla shared that it is often our early experiences that can play into our present. For example, if we shared our hearts by singing happily in a room full of people and were received with praise and encouragement, this implements in our sense of self that it is safe to share our voice and we will be supported. Though, taken the other way, if in this instance as children we were scorned for singing and told to quieten down, this can begin a narrative in our mind that we should not speak up, to remain quiet, and that it is not safe to express ourselves. How many can relate to this? These beliefs we pick up can begin to impact our decision-making, confidence to make ourselves visible, and how we build relationships. These are all key factors to our overall well-being and business ventures.

To practice self-compassion is to give oneself grace, to mindfully recognize when the inner critic arises, and to respond from a place of support and understanding as opposed to holding onto painful thoughts. A practice of self-compassion can begin to gently ease some of the inner barriers that may be holding us back from showing up as our full selves and it is a powerful act of self-respect against anyone who ever made us feel otherwise.

Here's to all the Black female founders paving the way to success, practicing self-compassion, and honouring one's well-being. You are seen.

Below are some quotes from participants involved in this session:

“The brunch and learn session creates a safe space for everyone to share, connect, and inwardly reflect on the foundational elements within and around each individual that will influence their business journey. It helps the founders of our programme to honour that their well-being is a key influence and most important aspect for every step they take moving forward.” - Tilda

“Your mental well-being is just as important as your physical one, if not even more so.” - Tamara Wray

Applications are now open for our May 2023 cohort!
